I've only seen this behavior in older laptops where the wifi adapter is on its way out. I have a feeling that you may have a lemon (bad unit). Or it's possible the wifi wire isn't seated correctly to the wifi chip. Laptops have, usually, two wires that pop onto the chip and run up the bezel of the monitor to the antenna.
